The Modesto Bee, April 30, 1975, p. C-2, contains a wedding announcement for the wedding written about in a previous post.

I should note that I found birth records on ancestry.com for a couple of Earl's daughters that listed Campbell as their mother's maiden name.

Melvin Marion Herring Obituary Found!

Thanks to Ancestry.com I located the obituary for Melvin Marion Herring. According to the obituary, Melvin passed away on December 26, 1961 in Phoenix, AZ and was buried on December 30, 1961 in Tucson, AZ in the South Lawn Memorial Park. The obituary is located in the Tucson Daily Citizen, dated December 29, 1961 on page 30.

This article announces the wedding of Kenneth Allen Kolster of Roseville and Cindy E. Lucas of Sacramento. Cindy's parents are listed as Mr. and Mrs. Earl L. Lucas of Sacramento, having moved from Modesto 5 years previously. Deneece and Susan Lucas are mentioned as Cindy's sisters. The wedding took place on the wedding anniversary of the bride's parents.

Several guests from Modesto had unexpected reunions with former Modestans now living in Sacramento at the wedding uniting Cindy E. Lucas of Sacramento and Kenneth Allen Kolster of Roseville in marriage.

The bride and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl L. Lucas, lived in Modesto until five years ago, when he accepted a spot in the State Controller's office. The bridegroom's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Frederick K. Kolster of Roseville.

The wedding was held in the garden of the Kolster home, which slopes into a natural ampitheater on the shore of Folsom Lake.

I'm seeking information on my wife's ggg-grandmother, Hannah SUVER b. abt 1814-1828. Born and reared in OH. Married Morgan LYNN. They had a daughter, Mary Catherine LYNN who married Joseph Coffman BYERS. (His parents were John BYERS and Priscella PENDLETON, daughter of _______ PENDLETON, who is said to have served under Geo. Washington in the Revolutionary War.) In turn, Joseph and Mary Catheine had a daughter, Sallie Alice BYERS, b. 25 July 1864 near Kalamazoo MI. Hannah had several siblings, one of which was Joseph W. SUVER. He went on the California Gold Rush in 1848-49. Soon after, he went to OR where he had a family, lived part of the time near Corvallis OR (there is a town named Suver near Corvallis). In 1861, he still had relatives in OH to whom he wrote. The SUVER family is thought to be of Dutch descent. Interested in hearing from anyone researching these surnames.

The post was made by Gary D. Kline. I really wish we had got together while he was still alive. He passed away in 2002. I must try to get ahold of his wife, or children, again.

I found the following at a Jefferson, County website:

Clear Creek Valley Baptist Church
Address: 10555 W. 44th Ave., Wheat Ridge, 80033

The name is descriptive of the location. The church was originally Clear Creek Valley Church organized in 1890. In 1892 the name was changed to Alathe Church. In 1905 the faltering congregation became a mission of Galilee Baptist, Denver, and was named Fruitdale Baptist, adopting the name of the neighborhood. In 1990 the centennial observance research led to the name change back to Clear Creek Valley Baptist Church. This is a conservative Baptist denomination and is the site of the Rocky Mountain Conservative Baptist Association headquarters.

I think the 6730 Indiana is Gordon's home address.

Lee Herring Story

"Earl did a real good job and it landed him a ride in one of Gordon Herring's 170 Offy champ cars; the one that Johnny McDaniels had built for Bobby Ball to drive. It was a beautiful car.

One day at a sprint car race in Cannon City, Gordon was leading and Earl was gaining fast, as Lee Herring and Ethel Kouba were sitting in the stands. Lee turned to Ethel and asked, 'You don't suppose that Earl would pass Gordon, do you, Ethel?' Ethel said, 'Yes, I believe that he might if he can.' Lee explained, 'You don't pass the boss!!' Well, Earl did pass the boss and he lost his ride in the process."

Byers Oct. 6, 1861; three children, one daughter having preceded her mother to the better world some years ago. The two left are Mrs. M. F. Herring, route five, Clinton, and J. F. Byers near Chilhowee. With her husband and family, she came to Missouri 36 y ears ago, locating in Johnson, then in Henry. Some years ago, she moved to our city. Formerly a C. P., she had been in late years a devoted member of the Christian Church of Clinton. She had always striven to do her best but her life on earth is over. Funeral at the home in the northwest part of Clinton, with burial at Fields Creek.

What a find! Mary C. Byers is the mother of Sallie Alice Herring (Byers). I have Mary listed as Catherine. I'm wondering if Catherine is her middle name?

This also provides a name for Sallie's brothers, J. F. Byers.

It appears my ancestors have even deeper roots in Henry County, Missouri, than I realized. In Clinton, Missouri in particular!

A kind soul fulfilled my photo request left at Findagrave.com for a photo of the grave marker at Cecil Carothers.

Cecil's middle initial of O likely stands for Orlando or Oscar from his dad. Cecil's death certificate doesn't list a middle name.

An anonymous comment posted to this blog has led to the findagrave.com memorial for Gordon Herring, and to an entry for Gordon on the Motorsport Memorial website.

In the notes of the Motorsport Memorial website is the following:

Gordon Herring was a resident of Golden, CO, USA, and had raced sprint cars for several years. At the Steele County Fairgrounds in Owatonna, MN, USA, he was injured when he rolled his Offenhauser sprinter. He died the next day in a hospital in Rochester, MN.The IMCA Yearbook has this tribute: "Gordon Herring: a businessman, a gentleman and a veteran race driver whose very presence at a meet added class to the presentation. Gordon Herring whose kindness and consideration of others was an inherent part of his character. Gordon Herring who loved racing more than anything else in the world". Herring was buried in Arvada Cemetery, Arvada, CO, USA.

William Henry Carothers Grave Marker

Received: Jackson County Cemeteries, Salt Creek Township

I have received the book mentioned in this post. Kudos to the Jackson County Genealogical Society for sending it so fast! Not to mention compiling the information in the first place!

There are two Carothers listed in the Lutes/Ermy Cemetery as follows:

Annie Hashman Carothers: b. 2 Feb. 1859; d. 2 Dec. 1919
Nathan D. Carothers: b. 20 Oct. 1868 [only one date]

Annie and Nathan are burried on the same row in the cemetery. Only 3 people are listed as buried in that row, the other, George W. Hashman, listed as being buried between them. Of course, there are likely numerous unmarked graves in the row.

As there are numerous Hashman's buried nearby, I think it is safe to say that Annie's maiden name is Hashman. So, which Carothers was Annie married too? Nathan? He is 9 year younger than her. Is Nathan and in law?

I need to look through the related names in this area and check for them.

A quick check on FindAGrave.com yields a picture of Annie and Nathan's grave stones, and more information about them. The person who posted Nathan's info added this:

Only the date of Oct 20, 1868 on stone that has fallen and lying against base.
My family records show Nathan born 1868 and died 1943.
The son of James Carothers and Martha Jane Bailey.
