My Virtual Cemetery - www.findagrave.com

FindaGrave has a nice indexing feature they call a "virtual" cemetery. It is a way to put all of the FindaGrave entries into one "cemetery". Thereby making it easy to quickly locate entries.

Steele County Fair and Gordon Herring

A responder to one of my posts, on a genealogy message board, requesting obituaries or news articles regarding Gordon Herring's accident mentioned that it was likely during the Steele County Free Fair.

This same responder mentioned that he was probably taken to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota after his accident.

Greenlawn Cemetery, Springfield, Missouri

I have to say "Thank you" once again to Terri Mindock for responding so kindly to my request on an Ancestry.com message board for a snapshot of the markers of Sallie Alice Herring (Byers) and her daughter, Della Herring. All of the images in this post were taken by Terri.

The web/internet connects people from all over the world, allowing information to be located and retrieved much more easily. But in genealogy, it often requires volunteers who are willing to sacrifice there time and effort on the behalf of complete strangers. This is one such case.

To view a larger version of the pictures in this post, just click on the picture. Click your Back button to return.

Sallie and Della are buried in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Springfield, Missouri. The following picture is of the entrance sign to the cemetery.

In the picture below, Terri circled and labeled the markers to show the locations of the markers in relation to each other.

The following marker is Sallie's.

The following are two pictures of Della's marker.

Bessie Herring - Social Security Record

There is a Social Security Record for Bessie Herring and it contains the following:

Name: Bessie Herring
SSN: 527-34-4160
Last Residence: 80303 Boulder, Boulder, Colorado, United States of America
Born: 7 Nov 1886
Last Benefit: 80262 Denver, Denver, Colorado, United States of America
Died: Dec 1976
State (Year) SSN issued: Arizona (Before 1951 )

This Bessie is a good candidate for Melvin Herring's wife. The SSN was issued in Arizona before 1951, and we have a birth certificate for her daughter Doris in Phoenix, Az in 1928. And her birth year is right, I'm not sure if I have her exact birth date anywhere else, I'll have to check on that. Her last benefit was in Denver, CO and last residence was in Boulder, CO, which is where Gordon, her son and Bob her grandson are associated with automobile racing in the Denver, CO area.

Bessie lived to be 90 years old! I noticed she was listed as being born in Fort Scott, Kansas on Doris' birth certificate. Dinklage, Bessie's maiden name, seems familiar to me. I've looked over a lot of Fort Scott records, so it could just be from that. Perhaps I've seen the name associated with Melvin in Fort Scott. Another thing to check into.

I've been to Boulder a couple of times and didn't even know any of this history. I can now start tracking down this new information on Bessie. Her obituary, death certificate, SSN request form. She may be buried in the Boulder area. Perhaps I will be able to locate some information about Melvin's death and burial. Also, I wonder if Bob is still alive and in the area.

Bob and Gordon Herring and Racing

I sent an email to the Colorado Automobile Racing Club (CARC), and received a friendly response to ask around about the Herrings and this link to the Colorado Racing Memories website. It has pictures and articles about Bob Herring's racing career running from 1964 to 1977. Bob is Gordon Herring's son. And I believe Gordon is Melvin Herring's son.

There is a death certificate for Gordon in the Minnesota state records:

Name: Gordon Kenneth Herring
Birth Date: 8 Aug 1920
Death Date: 24 Aug 1964
Death County: Olmsted
State File Number: 013957
Certificate Number: 013957
Certificate Year: 1964
Record Number: 1578573

I will send off for it soon. Here's the link for the Minnesota Dept. of Health webpage with the information for requesting a death certificate.

Gordon Kenneth Herring

Gordon Kenneth Herring is listed as a son of Melvin M. Herring and Bessie in notes written by my grandfather, Gerald Carothers. He also writes that he was born in 1920 and died in August 1964 in Rochester, Minn at a racetrack. Gordon was my grandfather's cousin.

I found a Gordon Herring in the Social Security database as having been born on August 8, 1920 and dying in August 1964.

Googling around there are references to Gordon Herring who is involved in racing sprint cars, and that he died in a racing accident at a racetrack in or near Owatonna, Minnesota in August 1964.

Here is a Gordon Herring who is a lifetime member of CARC, the Colorado Automobile Racing Club. I should check into this to see if it is the same Gordon.

Rather than list these references, I'll just leave the google link. I'll have to look into Gordon some more. There must be some information out there about him. I also need to look into whether he was married and had any children. Being 44 when he died, it is quite likely.

Gordon was Doris Joan Herring's older brother. That's two kids for Melvin and Bessie. Given that Doris was born in 1928 and Gordon in 1920, he would be the other child referred to if Bessie is also Gordon's mother. I will assume that is the case for the moment.

I have left a obituary lookup request and newspaper articles relating to the accident and death of Gordon on a message board for Steele County, Minnesota. Owantonna is in Steele county.

Another branch revealed

I received a letter from my Aunt Lana containing a filled out family record for her descendants, 3 sons, all married, and 2 grandchildren. Time to update my database!

Sallie and Della Herring obituaries

Thanks to William Hall of Missouri, I have received two obituaries for Della Herring, and two for her mother Sallie Alice Herring (Byers). I also have a copy of information about Sallie from a document titled "Klingner Funeral Home Records".

From this, I have learned the following about Sallie:
Died: 25 Oct 1938
Born: 25 Jul 1864 in Michigan
Father: Joseph C. Byers, born in Ohio
Mother: Catherine Lynn, born in Ohio
Survivors: Melvin M. Herring, Prescott, AZ and Della M., Springfield, 3 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild

1 of her grandchildren is my grandfather, Gerald Carothers, and the 1 great grandchild is my father, who was born in Dec of 1937 in Prescott, AZ.

A Family Visit

My family and I visited with my Aunt Lana. It is the first time she and I have been together since I was a child. I gave her some family pictures, some she had never seen of her father and his parents. I also gave her a personalized pedigree chart and descendants of Clark and Rachel Carothers. I asked Lana to fill out and return a family sheet on her children, so that I can add them to my records. This will fill in another branch of the descendants of Clark and Rachel Carothers.

Lana had some notes her Dad, my grandpa, had written regarding our family. She also shared a letter from Della Herring, grandpa's aunt, in which she detailed her funeral arrangements, and the fact that her mother, Sallie Alice Herring (Byers), is buried next to Della's plot in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Springfield, Missouri.

I have also received an email from someone who has offered to send me a copy of Della and Sallie's obituaries. I have a copy of Della's obituary, although it may not be the only one. It was pretty brief. I do not have a copy of Sallie's obituary, so it will be great to get a copy of it.

Birth Certificate of Doris Joan Herring

I found a copy of the birth certificate for Doris Joan Herring.

Who is Doris Joan Herring? She is the daughter of Melvin M. Herring and Bessie M. Dinklage. Melvin is my grandfather Gerald's uncle, and Doris is my grandfather's cousin. Did you follow all of that? Doris is also Della Herring's niece.

Melvin was born in Yolo County, CA and Bessie was born in Fort Scott, Kansas. They also have another child.

Della Herring's Cemetery Marker

I called Greenlawn Cemetery in Springfield, Missouri, and they were kind enough to go out into the cemetery and visually inspect Della Herring's grave site to determine whether she had a grave marker or not. She does! The marker is about 8 x 14, it has her name and birth and death dates.

Della Herring's SSN application

I have received a reply from the Social Security Administration regarding my request for a copy of Della Herring's Social Security Application form. The form confirms information I already have, and provides some new information.

Name: Della Minnie Herring
Address: 331 West Locust, Springfield, Missouri
Employer: Hamlin, Hamlin & Hamlin
Employer Address: 212 1/2 E. Commercial St., Springfield, Missouri
Age at last birthday: 43
Birthdate: September 10, 1893
Birthplace: Clinton, Missouri
Father: Marion Francis Herring
Mother: Sallie Alice Byers
Sex: Female
Color: White
Date signed: December 4, 1936
Signature: Della M. Herring

This confirms Della's parents, and that I have the right Della Herring. Also, it confirms the birth date and place.

New information is that Della's middle initial stands for Minnie. Also, her address and information about her employer at the time. There is a possibility that some information about her can be had from that source.

It looks like Della was living just a few blocks from her place of employment at the time.

Greenlawn Funeral Home reply about Della Herring

I have received a reply from the Greenlawn Funeral Home regarding my request for information about the burial of Della Herring. The only information they had was the location of her burial:

Section 04, Lot 07, Grave 6

I will call and see if she has a marker. If so, I'd like to get a picture of it.

Funeral Home information about Della Herring

I received a response from Klingner-Cope Family Funeral in Springfield, MO. Here is the information:

Name: Della Herring
Date of birth: September 10, 1893
Date of death: January 2, 1972
Time of death: 6:15 am
Place of death: Home / Sunshine Acres
Age: 78
Birthplace: Missouri
Father: William M. Herring
Mother: Sallie A. Byers
Internment: Greenlawn Cemetery
Survivors: Gerald M. Carothers, nephew and Mrs. J. W. Jesiel, niece

This would confirm I have the right Della Herring. It also provides where she was interned and a name for her niece, although I'm sure it is her husband's name. But, it's a start.

Greenlawn Memorial Gardens is also known as Greenlawn Cemetery
3506 N National Avenue
Springfield, Greene County, Missouri 65803
417-833-1212

I'll have to contact them next to get the location of the grave and whether or not it has a marker. Perhaps they will send me a picture of the marker, if there is one.

Sunshine Acres Rest Home in Springfield, Missouri (Della Herring)

You will notice in Della Herring's obituary that she was a resident of the "Sunshine Acres Rest Home". I believe that the following information is about this institution and what became of it.

In Missouri, county government was legally bound to provide that "poor persons shall be relieved, maintained and supported by the county of which they are inhabitants" (Missouri R.S. 1909@1333). The county treasurer had to maintain a separate fund for this purpose. The statutes further provided that "aged, infirm, lame, blind or sick persons who are unable to support themselves and when there are no other persons required by law and able to maintain them, shall be deemed poor persons."

In Greene County the County Poor Farm was charged with the care of indigent and ill citizens who had no other resources for care. This agency was later known as the County Home and in 1955 became Sunshine Acres. The facility closed in 1978.

This was found on this page.

The following also talks about the same facility:

Alms Cemetery and Alms House
The Almshouse Cemetery is notable for its original modesty. The majority of the headstones were hand-made of concrete by the residents of the Almshouse. The Cemetery is not large by some standards, but many bodies are believed to be buried there which may have never had markers (estimates are as high as 1,000). The cemetery was literally abandoned when the last Almshouse known as “Sunshine Acres” discontinued operation. The buildings were demolished and the property was turned into a pasture. There is a large marble Historic Marker (placed at the site in 1979) which stands near the Northwest corner of the cemetery. The Almshouse Cemetery, although ostensibly barren of names and dates, actually may ultimately provide a wealth of information about the people of Springfield and Greene County, their attitudes concerning the poor, the mentally disturbed, the abandoned and the individuals not otherwise entitled to a more distinguished place in society. As information surfaces about this cemetery, insight into the lives and culture of the people of Greene County in the period from 1930 through 1970 is revealed. The lives of Greene Counties’ rich and the influential are well documented. This site is special for its potential to tell the little-known stories of the other people of Greene County.
County registration date: Aug. 21, 2000.

Della's Probate Records

I received the probate records for Della Herring, but they were not too informative. I received 3 copies, 2 of which were identical. They all involved Klingner. I'm assuming she died without a will, no significant property and no close relatives. What became of her personal effects? Who knows. Her obituary listed a nephew, which is my grandfather, Gerald Carothers, and a niece, who would have to be a daughter of Melvin Herring, Della's brother. I'll need to contact the county to ensure I got everything, i.e. there was no copying error.

I sent a letter to Klingner a couple of days ago asking for copies of any records they may have. I would like to know what became of her remains, i. e. if she was buried, what cemetery she is buried in.

Fortunately, I'll be visiting with my Aunt Lana next month and she has some information about Aunt Della. Della would take train rides to Southern California to visit her nephew, and my grandfather, Gerald Carothers and his family. Aunt Lana also has Della's letters that she wrote to them over the years. I'm guessing she will have some pictures of Aunt Della too.

Della Herring's obituary

I have received a response to my Ancestry.com message board request for an obituary lookup for Della Herring. It is as follows:

Springfield Daily News, Wed., Jan. 5, 1972

MISS DELLA HERRING
Miss Della Herring, 78, of the Sunshine Acres Rest Home, died at 6:15 a.m. Sunday there after a long illness. She is survived by a niece and a nephew. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Klingner.
If this is the Della I'm looking for, and I think it is, then the nephew is my grandfather Gerald Carothers.

The SSI birth date of September 10, 1893 and the above death date of January 2, 1972, yields an age of 78 years, 3 months and 23 days at her death. Gerald died in the following year.

Klingner has been renamed to:

Klingner-Cope Family Funeral
1635 N Benton AveSpringfield, MO 65803
(417) 862-0511

I also received an email that Della's probate records will be mailed to me free of charge. I'll post the info as soon as it arrives.

In search of Della Herring, SSN?

The Social Security Death Index at Rootsweb gives the following information:

Della Herring
Birth: Sep 10, 1893
Death: Jan 1972
Last Residence: 65802 Springfield, Greene County, Missouri
SSN: 491-03-4168
Issued: Missouri

Could this be the Della Herring to which I'm related?

Searching the Greene County, Missouri website probate records, I found the following:

Della M. Herring
Date: 1972-02-28
Cross File: C10-994
Reel Number: *B62-0598
Box: 391

The date would seem to match the date of death in the SSN information. I have requested a copy of the probate records. I will be requesting a copy of the SSN application form.

The Greene County, Missouri connection is further confirmed by the information in this earlier post.

Bertha Lucretia Redwine in 1900 US Census

In putting together a timeline of Lucretia's life, so that I can start researching the missing information, I have found her in the 1900 US Census living with her parents in Cocke County, Tennessee, Civil District No. 16.

Bertha's age is listed as 18 and Ella, her sister, is 16.

Bertha's father's occupation is as a station agent, and her brother, Thomas, is an assistant station agent.

In the 1910 US Census, Bertha and Ella are no longer living with their parents. I have not found them yet. Their father James died in 1911.

Family visits yield family treasures!

On a visit to my parents home today, I was able to scan some photos that I have long wanted copies of. The first one is of my grandmother, Dixie Chloe Black.

Next is a photo of my grandfather, Gerald Carothers in his Prescott Police uniform.

The following is Gerald Carothers and his son and my dad, Edwin Carothers, in 1956.

The following is Edwin Carothers in his youth.

The following is William Henry Carothers and his grandson, Edwin Carothers.

Burial place of Amanda Jane Carothers?

I found the following information here:

Good Hope Cemetery
Westfield Township, Clark County, Illinois

Carothers, A. J.
born: 23 Feb 1842
died: 17 jan 1866
age: 23y 10m 22d

Could this be the burial location of Amanda Jane Carothers?

There are also lots of Lowerys buried in this cemetery. I'll have to look into that.

Alva and Alma Carothers (twins)

I found the death notice below while searching with Google:

"Clark County Herald", May 20, 1874
An infant of Mr. and Mrs. Clark Carothers who live in New Richmond, died last Saturday night. It was but a few day's old and was one of a pair of twin. The remaining one is not expected to live. It is so arranged by an alwise God, that the young as well as the old must be taken from us.

Little Alva Carothers lived only 10 days, but Alva's twin, Alma survived to be listed in the 1880 US Census. Beyond that, I have yet to find out what became of Alma.

An interesting piece of information is that Clark and Rachel are living in New Richmond.

Here is a useful Illinois website.

Anna Dean Deck - Lucretia's Niece

Sometimes you get lucky. I was reviewing my entry with the California Social Security Death Index information for Anna Dean Deck, Lucretia Redwine's niece by her sister Ella, when I noticed her last residence was Baldwin Park, Los Angeles, CA. On a whim I checked the Rose Hills Memorial Park to see if she was buried there. They have a "Grave Location Search" feature on their website. Sure enough, Anna is buried there! The information from the search yields:

Anna Dean Deck
Date of Death: 02/15/1995
Burial Property Name: Floral Lawn
Burial Section: 1
Burial Lot: 912
Grave/Niche: 2
Entrance Gate: 1

My grandfather Gerald Carothers is also buried in this cemetery. That is what made me think of it in the first place. As Lucretia was Gerald's step mother, and Anna's Aunt, that would make Gerald and Anna cousins, eh?

Blanding, Utah

My family and I attended the Black Family Reunion in Blanding, Utah this summer. My paternal grandmother is Dixie Chloe Black, and the reunion is for the descendants of Dixie's father, Edwin Zemira Black. We all had a great time, especially the kids who enjoyed meeting and playing with cousins.

I lived in Blanding for several months during 1969 as a young child. And for many relatives in Blanding, that was likely the first and last time they saw me until this reunion.

We did spend several hours in the Blanding City Cemetery looking for the graves of relatives, only to find on the way out that there was a very nice map and directory at the entrance that we had overlooked on arrival!

Below is the grave marker of Edwin Zemira Black and Chloe Allan. Ardell Palmer is listed on the marker, but as you notice there is no death date for her because she is still alive. We met her at the family reunion. Ardell is a very sweet woman. You can click on the image to see a larger version of the image.

Below is the grave marker for my paternal grandmother and her husband Duke Sober. You can click on the image to see a larger version of the image.

I have many more pictures, but alas, not enough time at present. More later!

Information from Prescott, AZ visit

The following are some documents I collected copies of while in Prescott, AZ.

For Gerald Carothers and Dixie Chloe Black, I have a copy of their Marriage License and Marriage Certificate.

For John H. Carlisle and Bertha Lucretia Redwine, I have a copy of their Marriage License and Marriage Certificate.

I also have some pictures of grave markers from the Mountain View Cemetery in Prescott, AZ. Unfortunately, William Henry Carothers and his wife Lucretia have no markers. I plan on chatting with the family and raising some money to remedy that. Of course, the cemetery has excellent maps of the locations of all the graves, and we did stop by William and Lucretia's graves.

Edwin Richie Black is a cousin of my father's that drowned while training for the FBI in New Orleans. I hope I got that right. I'll have to get more information on that. I believe he is the son of Allan Black who lived in Prescott, AZ working as a plumber. Uncle Allan was there when Dixie Black and her sister, Zelma, lived in Prescott. I'll have to collect more information to nail that down better. My Dad told me about his grave being in this cemetery, so we stopped by Edwin's grave.

Ella B. Tewksbury is Ella B. Redwine, Lucretia's sister. Ella took care of the arrangements for Lucretia's burial. In fact, William Henry Carothers is buried in the grave directly to the left of Ella's husband.

This is the grave marker for Ella's husband, Walter Scott Tewksbury.

Reporting from Prescott, AZ

Today I was able to visit the Mountain View Cemetery in Prescott, AZ to visit the graves of:

William Henry Carothers
Bertha Lucretia Carothers (Redwine)
Ella B. Tewksbury
Walter Scott Tewksbury
Edwin Richie Black

The first two were unmarked graves, and the last three were marked. I'll post pictures later.

The cemetery manager was very helpful. He looked up the records and, maps in hand, showed me to each grave. I really appreciated his help!

I'm going to get markers for William and Crete. I'll see if some of the other descendants want to contribute.

I was also able to spend 3 hours at the Sharlott Hall Museum archives examing records related to:

William Henry Carothers
Bertha Lucreatia Carothers (Redwine)
Gerald Carothers
Dixie Black

I was able to locate information in city and telephone directories. I ordered a print of a picture they have of Gerald in his navy uniform and another picture of his son Wade. I should get them within a month. I also got copies of the marriage license and certificate for the following:

Gerald Carothers and Dixie Black
John H. Carlisle and Bertha Lucretia Redwine

While I was able to learn alot, I am also left with more questions to try and answer.

Tomorrow my family and I are off to Blanding, Utah, for the Black family reunion. Black as in Dixie Black.

Info on Sallie Alice Byers from OFGS

I got a letter back from the OFGS regarding any records they may have on Sallie Alice Byers. There was some helpful information in the letter regarding this line of research. The researcher also provided copies of other Byers and Herrings found in their records.

The 1916 Ft. Scott city directory has Mrs. Sallie A. Herring as a resident at 748 S. Hill. Della M. Herring is also listed at the same address with teacher listed as her occupation. Melvin M. Herring is also listed at the same address with "colr M L Drake & Co" listed after his name.

The 1920 US Census for Ft. Scott, 1st Ward, lists Sallie A. Herring, 55, widowed, living with her daughter Della Herring, 26, single, on Scott Ave.

Carothers buried in Orange County, CA?

I was looking on Internment.net for pictures of the Blanding Cemetery, but found none. Interestingly though I found this in my own backyard. And no, I have no idea who they are. I was looking at FindAGrave.com to see if they had any pictures of the Blanding Cemetery. They don't seem to have any yet. I guess I'll add some when I get back from my trip to Blanding this summer.

I looked up Gerald Carothers at the Rose Hills Cemetery, but he was not listed on FindAGrave.com, so I added an entry for him. It is here.

I think I have discovered John H. Carlisle, who was married to Lucretia Redwine in the 1910 US Census. He is living as a boarder with John and Elizabeth Witherlay in Wickenburg, Maricopa County, AZ.

Sex: M
Race: W
Age: 55
Marital Status: S
Birthplace: New Jersey
Father's Birthplace: New York
Mother's Birthplace: Illinois
Occupation: Miner
Workplace: Quartz mine (John worked here too)

Unfortunately, my US Census source does not have an index for the 1920 US Census in Arizona. I will keep looking around though.

I will request Lucretia's death certificate, and the marriage certificates for her marriage to John H. Carlisle and William Henry Carothers.

I found John and Elizabeth Witherlay in the 1920 US Census in the same town, but John is no longer living there. John is now the acting postmaster, and his wife is his assistant.

It looks like John H. Carlisle has moved out of Wickenburg. I did not find him in the town in 1920.

Claypool, Gila County, AZ - 1930 US Census

I'm checking the 1930 US Census, Claypool, Gila County, AZ, for Lucretia Redwine and her husband, John H.Carlisle. I found part of it in Gila, Roll 57, Book 1 (At the end of Miami Precinct 7 in source). This corresponds to enumeration district 4-41. The remainder is in enumeration district 4-38 (Miami Precinct 4).

On my first look through these enumeration districts I was unable to find John or Lucretia.

Lots of family mail this week!

I received a letter from my Aunt Lana this week. I sent a letter to her mother to request some information about her parents, and Aunt Lana replied in her behalf. I was very happy to receive her response, and hope to continue our correspondence.

I also received some family histories this week from Shirley, my Kansas cousin. She is a descendant of Clark and Rachel Carothers through their son Jerome.

It has been a busy week for genealogy!

Gerald Carothers grave

Today I visited the Rose Hills Cemetery, mentioned in this post, to visit the grave of my grandfather, Gerald Carothers. It is the first time I have done so.

Gerald Carothers

I have included some pictures of the cemetery around the grave. It is a beautiful cemetery.

Here is a reply to my post for information about Lucretia R. Carothers:

If you've not searched the family trees on ancestry.com-these two women are shown to be two of the 10 children of James Haskell Redwine Jr. and Frances Ann Fowler; Bertha Lucretia Redwine married first to John H.Carlisle in 1924 in Prescott,AZ; he died in 1934 in AZ; then apparently married to William Carothers.

Ella Beatrice Redwine first married to Charles Wesley Yount in 1900 in TN.(based on the surviving children in her obit-this famiy is in Anderson Co., TN in 1920-children listed are Vivian age 15, Anna age 8, Everett age 6, Charles Jr. age 4, and Mark age 1.Charles Wesley Yount registered for the WWI draft in Campbell Co., TN, birth date May 6,1882 and was a coal miner-next of kin Ella Yount)

Again, based on the survivors; the surviving sister "Mrs.Leslie Moser", was Gypsey Frances Redwine.

If you've not wandered through the online birth and death certificates for AZ, there are death certificates for Lucretia's husbands, and birth records for children of the youngest Redwine daughter Edna Earle who married Joseph Gibson.
http://genealogy.az.gov/

I think I had initially looked up John H.Carlisle in Arizona's online database, but narrowed my search to Yavapai County. Actually, his death certificate is in Gila County. It looks like he took his own life with a gun on May 17, 1934 in Claypool, Gila County, AZ. Lucretia Carlisle is listed as his wife, but not as the informant on the death certificate. No doubt a very sad tale there.

More Redwine family members and researchers respond

I have received two more responses to my Redwine family queries regarding Lucretia. Both are from descendants of Lucretia's parent's family. One of them is from the researcher who posted the information on Rootsweb.com I reference in a previous post. He has a photo of Aunt Crete, and more information about this family. How great is that!

More info on Lucretia from Rootsweb.com

I found the following at Rootsweb.com:

Name: Bertha Lucretia Redwine
Sex: F
Birth: OCT 1881 in Rankin, Tennessee
Father: James Haskell Redwine , Jr.
b: AUG 1852 in Sevier County, Tennessee
Mother: Frances Ann Fowler
b: AUG 1856 in Cocke County, Tennessee
Marriage 1 John H. Carlisle
Married: 16 FEB 1924 in Prescott, Arizona

Lucretia Redwine's parents and siblings!

I posted the obituaries for Lucretia and her sister, Ella, on the Genealogy.com and Ancestry.com message boards for Redwine, Arizona and Tennessee. Today I received an email from another researcher that contains information about Lucretia's parents and siblings! This information is on Rootsweb.com:

Name: James Haskell Redwine , Jr.
* Sex: M
* Birth: AUG 1852 in Sevier County, Tennessee
* Death: 21 OCT 1911 in Rankin, Tennessee

Father: James Haskell Redwine b: 12 MAY 1812 in Lee County, Virginia
Mother: Malinda Jane Nifong b: 13 JUN 1813 in Russell County, Virginia
Marriage 1 Frances Ann Fowler b: AUG 1856 in Cocke County, Tennessee
*Married: 20 JAN 1876 in Cocke County, Tennessee
Children

2. Thomas Eckle Redwine b: 8 JUL 1879 in Corn Hollow, Tennessee
3. Bertha Lucretia Redwine b: OCT 1881 in Rankin, Tennessee
4. Ella Beatrice Redwine b: 25 NOV 1883, *Married: 25 DEC 1900 in Newport,
Tennessee to Charles Wesley Yount
5. Frederick Gladstone Redwine b: 21 JUL 1886 in Rankin, Tennessee
6. Isaac Talmadge Redwine b: 1 JAN 1889 in Cocke County, Tennessee
7. Annie Grace Redwine b: 17 NOV 1891 in Rankin, Tennessee
8. Mark Moore Redwine b: 30 NOV 1892 in Rankin, Tennessee
9. Gypsy Frances Redwine b: 15 DEC 1894 in Rankin, Tennessee *Married: 26 SEP
1913 in Knoxville, Tennessee to Leslie Warner Moser b: 5 AUG 1878 in Vonore,
Tennessee. 5 children born in Vonore, Tennessee
10. Edna Earle Redwine b: 18 MAR 1896

From Ella B. Tewksbury's obituary, we have a match to child number 4 above, Ella Beatrice. The birth date is an exact match, and the fact that she married Charles Wesley Yount is a match with information I received regarding Ella's daughter Vivian.

From Lucretia's obituary, we have a matching birthdate and place to child number 3, Bertha Lucretia.

Both obituaries list Leslie Moser as a survivor. She is wife of child number 9, Gypsey Frances.

I'll be looking into this further. It is quite a break! That's the power of the internet in tracking down genealogical information. A couple days ago, I didn't even know Lucretia's name!

My thanks to this researcher, who I don't name only to protect their privacy!

Another possible niece of Lucretia's

Here is a very short obituary for another niece of Lucretia's by her sister Ella. See Ella's obituary here, where her daughter Jean is listed as a survivor.

The Daily Courier - Monday, July 21, 2003
Jean (Burges) Ward
Jean (Burges) Ward, 82, of Prescott, born June 8, 1921, in Tennessee, died Thursday, July 17, 2003, in Prescott. There will be a private cremation at Bradshaw Crematory, Prescott Valley. Arrangements by Arizona Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Home.

I found this using good old Google.

Another vote for Redwine

Okay, follow me on this one. Vivian Nelson is Lucretia's niece, by Lucretia's sister Ella. Below is information from ArizonaGravestones.org:

Vivian Frances NELSON

Arizona Pioneer Cemetery
Yavapai County, Arizona
Vivian F. (Yount) Nelson
b. April 19, 1904, Knoxville, Tn.
d. Nov. 21, 1985, Prescott, Az.
w/o John Hugh Nelson
d/o Charles Wesley & Ella B. (Redwine)

Notice the last line, Vivian is the daughter of Charles Wesley Yount and Ella B. Redwine. We first met Vivian in her mother's obituary. This provides further evidence for Lucretia's maiden name being Redwine. The 1904 date for Vivian's birth in Knoxville, TN provides some evidence as to Ella, and likely Lucretia's general whereabouts at the time. Lucretia's obituary states 1925 was the date for her arrival in Arizona.

Lucretia's sister in the 1930 US Census, AZ

Walter Tiwksberry and wife, Ella are listed in the 1930 US Census in Arizona, Yavapai County, Crown King. Both are 47 years old. They have 3 sons and a daughter living with them:
Everett (?), 16
Charlie, 14
Jean, 9
Teddy, 7

They are not listed in the 1920 US Census at the same location.

Lucretia Redwine?

In Ella B. Tewksbury's obituary, one of the survivors is listed as her daughter, Mrs. Anna Deck of Baldwin Park, Calif. Notice that Ella's sons have the surname Yount.

Looking up Anna Deck in the California Social Security Death Index yields the following:

Anna Dean Deck
Birthdate: 5/17/1911
Birthplace: Tennessee
Mother Maiden Name: Redwine
Father's Surname: Yount
Sex: F
Deathplace: Riverside
Deathdate: 2/15/1995
Age: 83
Last Residence: Baldwin Park, Los Angeles, CA

A rather good match. This indicates that Ella's maiden name is Redwine, and therefore it is likely Lucretia's maiden name as well. One can never tell with multiple marriages and such.

If I'm right, this will be a big help in tracking down more information about Lucretia and her family.

The Sharlot Hall Museum comes through

I have already received a response from the Sharlot Hall Museum from my online request for an obituary for Lucretia R. Carothers. That took all of 3 days!

From the Prescott Courier, December 3, 1969:

Lucretia R. Carothers

Lucretia Carothers passed away Wednesday in Mother Warfield's Nursing Home. She was born October 9, 1881 in Tenn., and had been a resident of Prescott for one year and of Arizona since 1925. She was a retired postal clerk.

She is survived by two sisters, Ellen Tewksberry, of Prescott, and Mrs. Leslie Moser of Florida; and one niece, of Prescott.

Services will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of the Garden with private internment in Mountain View Cemetery. A Christian Science reader will officiate.

Visitation in the Chapel of the Garden will be Friday 2 to 5 p.m.

They also sent a copy of an obituary for Lucretia's sister, Ellen Tewksberry.

From the Prescott Courier, October 21, 1974:

Tewksbury died Friday

Ella B. Tewksbury, 90, died Friday at Yavapai Community Hospital.

She was born on Nov. 25, 1883 in Rankin, Tenn., and came to Arizona at an early age with her parents. She originally lived in Prescott for two years and moved to Crown King where she met and married Walter Tewksbury, the last of the Pleasant Valley War Tewksburys. He died in 1945. She had lived in Prescott for the past five years.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Jean Burges, of Prescott, Mrs. Vivian Nelson of Crown King, Mrs. Anna Deck of Baldwin Park, Calif; two sons, Everett Yount, of Crown King, Theodore Yount of Phoenix; one sister Mrs. Leslie Moser of Vonroe, Tenn.; 23 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren.

Services were held Saturday at Hampton Funeral Home. Internment was at Mountain View Cemetery.
It is a bit annoying that they had no surviving brothers, nor are the parent's names mentioned, let alone the maiden name for these two sisters! But if they were, there would be no challenge for me, eh? There are some new clues that I will be pursuing.

They also sent a copy of the death certificate and an obituary for William Henry Carothers, Lucretia's husband. I already have copies of them, but it was good of them to be so thorough.

Changes at my genealogical database website

The recent upgrade of the software for my genealogical database website differentiates between photos and photos of documents. So, I added a 'Documents' menu selection to the front page of my website, and changed all my document photos to be documents.

When Photos are selected from a menu, only photos are listed. When Documents are selected from a menu, only documents are listed.

More evidence on Myrtle's family

I'm still in the process of contacting a distant Herring cousin, see this post for more information about the cousin and why I'm trying to contact them. My latest mail attempt to contact them failed with a returned letter and an "insufficient address" stamp. So, I called information and got a phone number. I was able to leave a message. Hopefully, it is the right Gary!

An interesting find that relates to this cousin's post and provides further evidence that this William and Sallie Alice Herring are Myrtle's parents is that in the 1910 US Census, Missouri, Henry County, Clinton, Sallie A. Herring is living directly next door to Andrew M. Carothers, the older brother of William Henry Carothers.

According to the census records, Sallie, age 45, is living at 529 North Third Street with son Melvin M., age 22, and daughter, M. L. Della, age 16. Sallie is listed as being a widow.

Della Herring appears in Myrtle's 1929 obituary. Sallie also appears in the obituary, but only as "Mrs. Herring". "Mrs. S. A. Herring" is the informant for Myrtle's death certificate. The death certificate also lists Kalamazoo, Michigan as the birthplace for Myrtle's mother. The census provides Michigan as Sallie's birthplace. Melvin's birthplace is given as California, and Della was born in Missouri.

This gives Myrtle born in Missouri (1885), Melvin in California (1887), and Della in Missouri ( about 1894). Sallie's husband, William, likely died between 1894 and 1910.

Obituary request for Lucretia R. Carothers

I sent a request, via their website, to the Sharlot Hall Museum for a copy of the obituary of Lucretia R. Carothers. Hopefully they can find one! As I mentioned before, I don't even know Lucretia's maiden name, parents, etc.

A new member of the Sharlot Hall Museum

I'm sending a letter to become a member of the Sharlot Hall Museum. I'm planning on visiting Prescott, AZ and the museum this summer. I have a few queries to make of them as well. Hopefully, I'll be making some of the queries before I go. For one, I need to determine how to locate the unmarked graves of William Henry Carothers and his wife Lucretia. I guess I better start working on that next.

More mail from OFGS!

I received my copy of the "Old Fort Log" from the OFGS a couple of days ago. It provides a lot of information about the organization and their members. There are also stories and newpaper items from the past which are interesting to read. I made a request for information about Myrtle Elizabeth's mother, Sallie Alice Herring. She lists Fort Scott as her place of residence on Myrtle's death certificate.

Although the letter, to the source for Sallie Alice Herring, came back in the mail, I found another address and sent that letter several days ago. I'm still hoping to hear back from him.

I just finished updating my online genealogy database website to the latest version of TNG software. It was not too bad to do. Let me know if you notice any problems.

Who is Lucretia R. Carothers?

Who is Lucretia R. Carothers? From an earlier post, you can see about all the information I know about her, except what memories my father has shared with me about her. I don't even know her maiden name. Hmmm... come to think of it, I never asked my Dad if he knew it. I'll have to start asking around.

Anyway, in doing an initial search for information about her on the internet, I did come across an interesting fact. Lucretia R. Garfield was the name of the First Lady of the US in 1881. Her husband was assassinated, dying on September 19, 1881. Just a few weeks before Lucretia R. Carothers was born.

After an assassin shot James on July 2nd, Lucretia returned to the White House. She nursed him and made decisions, showing a remarkable calm and courage that won her widespread admiration. The President was moved to Elberon in an attempt to make him more comfortable and to help his recovery. The move was fruitless. James A. Garfield died September 19, 1881 with his wife, Lucretia, and daughter, Mollie, at his side. Lucretia took over the funeral and burial arrangements. Garfield was buried at Lakeview Cemetery in Cleveland.

A coincidence? I think not. I'm guessing Lucretia R. Carothers was named after President Garfield's wife.

"You've got mail!" from OFGS

Well, my packet from the OFGS arrived on Friday. It contained the "Oak Grove Cemetery" book from the OFGS, but not the "Old Fort Log". I'm thinking that will show up in a separate mailing.

An OFGS volunteer was kind enough to search through their records for information I had requested regarding William Henry Carothers, his wife, Myrtle Elizabeth Herring, and their son, Gerald.

She looked for Gerald's school records and found him listed as being in the 7th grade in 1929. There was no individual picture, but she sent a group photo. She mentioned he did not show up in the newspaper as having graduated in 1934, which would confirm Gerald and William had moved to Prescott, AZ by that time. City directories had the following listings:

1923 William and Myrtle Carothers, 910 Main as a grocer, residing at 910 1/2 Main
1925 William and Myrtle Carothers, 910 Main as a grocer, residing at 910 1/2 Main
It lists O.T. Brown grocer at 910 Main, so he must be the owner.
No listings were found before 1923 or after 1925. A copy of a city directory includes William and Myrtle at 514 S. Wilson, and says "mach hlpr Frisco rd hse", which I assume was William's job at the time.

She was also able to acquire a record from the Konantz Funeral Home for Myrtle's funeral services. It has her parents listed as M. F. Herring and S. A. Byers. Born on May 6, 1885 and died on July 26, 1929, at age 44 years, 2 months and 20 days. The date of the service was on July 28, 1929 at 2:30pm at the Oak Grove Cemetery. The minister was H. John Cockerill.

Included in the packet was information about and records from the First United Methodist Church. Gerald's baptism record. Also, included were city records of Gerald's birth and Myrtle's death.

Myrtle is listed in the "Oak Grove Cemetery" book as being in an unmarked grave. The location of the grave is provided in the book. This is an interesting trend I need to look into. Apparently, William Henry and his second wife, Lucretia, are buried in Prescott, AZ in unmarked graves as well. And, of course, Clark and Rachel Carothers graves have no markers either. I have to say, it seems rather sad not to have some monument to mark the location of their remains.

Final Resting Place of Gerald Carothers

With the information that Gerald Carothers was buried in Whittier, CA, I found a website which listed cemeteries in Whittier. The first one I looked at was the Rose Hills Memorial Park and Mortuary. It had a grave lookup, and Gerald is buried there. I plan to make a trip there and visit his grave soon. It is only 30 to 45 minutes away from where I currently live. The information is as follows:

Gerald Carothers
Burial Property Name: Alder Lawn
Burial Section: 4
Burial Lot: 3302
Grave/Niche: 2
Entrance Gate: 1

My mother gave me Mabel's address in La Habra, also not far from where I live, and I've written a letter to her. From her date of birth she is 93 years old.

Sharlot Hall Museum - Prescott, AZ

I may have a chance of going through Prescott, AZ this summer, so I thought I'd looking for genealogically interesting places to visit. I came across the Sharlot Hall Museum in Prescott.

It looks like a top notch museum with a lot of historical and genealogical information. The website is quite nice and helpful. I was able to discover they have a 1946 picture of Wade Carothers as a child, and another of G. M. Carothers, United States Navy, 1940s. These are very likely my Uncle Wade and his father.

They also have a Yavapai County Cemetery Database in which I found my great-grandfather William Henry Carothers, along with the cemetery he is buried in. And I found his second wife Lucretia. The following is the information I retrieved from the database for William and Lucretia.

William Henry Carothers
Born: Clinton, Henry, Missouri 17 Apr 1881
Died: Prescott, Yavapai, Arizona 17 Jan 1944
Buried:Mountain View cemetery. Plot: L-D025 Marker: no
Spouse: Lucretia R. Carothers
Parents: Clark & Rachel (Lowery) Carothers
Occupation: stone mason
Remarks: resided Az. 10 years; d. Prescott Community Hospital: COD: heart
disease; Mt. View Cemetery records; C. E. Hunter Funeral Home; Az. Death Certificate

Lucretia R. Carothers
Born: Tennessee 09 Oct 1881
Died: Prescott, Yavapai, Arizona 03 Dec 1969
Buried:Mountain View cemetery. Plot: F-C118 Marker: no
Spouse: William Henry Carothers
Parents: Unknown
Occupation: Unknown
Remarks: Mt. View Cemetery records; Chapel of the Garden Funeral Home

From this information I've learned that William and Lucretia were buried in the Mt. View Cemetery. I didn't know that Lucretia was buried in Prescott. I got her birth date and birth state, but no maiden name, and nothing about her parents.

What disappoints me most is they apparently have no markers. The database did supply a plot location for both of them. If they had markers, I could use ArizonaGravestones.org to get a copy of the markers.

I have to say I'm quite impressed with the museum and the obviously dedicated staff. They are doing a great job preserving their history!

I googled for the "Northern Arizona Genealogy Society", but came up empty. Not online yet!

In any case, no trip to Prescott will be complete for me without a long stop at the Sharlott Hall Museum.

Sigh...

I received my letter to Gary back in the mail, the address is no longer any good. I'll have to continue trying to track him down.

I'm also still waiting for something in the mail from the Old Fort Genealogical Society.

Myrtle Elizabeth Herring's Parents?

The following is a post I came across last year, I believe. Anyway, click here to go to the page the post is located on. I found this post using www.google.com.

HERRING - KENDALL - BYERS

My wife's grandfather, Melvin Marion HERRING, was born at 10 PM, 8 Sept 1887 on a ranch five miles from the town of Yolo, Yolo Co., CA. His parents were (William) Francis Marion HERRING (b. 1 Jan, 1864 near Sacramento CA) and Sallie Alice BYERS (b. 25 July 1864 near Kalamazoo MI). A midwife, Mrs. BEASLEY of Yolo CA attended the birth and was witness thereto. Source: Notarized statement made by Sallie Alice HERRING on 10 June 1936 in Greene Co. MO. Melvin Marion HERRING went to KS where he married Bessie Margaret DINKLAGE (of the DINKLAGEs, HUMPHREYs, and LYONs, early KS settlers). Seeking information on other children of Francis Marion and Sallie Alice HERRING, as well as his parents, John HERRING and Frances KENDALL (d. 10 Jan 1864, nine days after Francis Marion's birth.) who lived near Sacramento CA in 1864.

Looking at Myrtle's death certificate, her father was born in Sacramento, CA, and her mother was born in Kalamazo, Michigan. From the post above, (William) Francis Marion Herring was born in Sacramento, CA and his wife, Sallie Alice Byers was born in Kalamazo, Michigan. If you look at the names of Myrtle's parents on the death certificate, you will note that the mother is listed as S. A. Herring, with a maiden name which could easily be Byers. The father's name is listed as W. F. Herring. Myrtle was born in 1885. Melvin Marion Herring, son of William and Sallie Herring, was born in 1887 in Yolo, CA. Myrtle could easily be Melvin's older sister.

In 1936, Sallie was back in Missouri. Myrtle's death certificate would indicate she was in Kansas in 1929.

Sometimes you get lucky!

Unfortunately, the email address is no longer active, and I can't find Gary, the poster, anywhere on the internet. I have located a mailing address for him, but it might not be valid. I'll try it anyway, you never know. Locating Gary would be great! Not only would I be in contact with a Herring Cousin, I should be able to get source reference and much more information about Myrtle's family, and mine!

Santa Fe school officials recall shooting victim

CARBONDALE - Michael Turnbull's friends and former classmates were looking forward to this weekend according to officials at Santa Fe Trail High School in rural Carbondale. Now, they will never forget the weekend, but for the wrong reasons.

Turnbull, 18, a former football player and wrestler at the Osage County school, was shot to death Thursday night while he exercised at Universal Nautilus health club in Wichita. A suspect has heen apprenhended in connection with the shooting, according to Wichita police.

"It's ironic that it happened this weekend," said assistant high school principal Bruce Cook. "The state high school tournament is going on down in Wichita this weekend. Some of our kids were, going down there and stay in his apartment in Wichita. They were really looking forward to renewing acquaintances and seeing people they haven't seen in a while."

Von Stein who coached Turnbull during his four year football career at the school, said Friday that Turnbull of rural Carbondale was "a good, solid young man" who planned a career in auto mechanics.

According to the coach, Turnbull moved to Wichita last fall and enrolled in the Wichita Automotive Institute.

"He was hard working, dependable, and never complained," recalled the coach. "He got along with well with others and was just pleasant to be around."

Cook said Turnbull, a May 1986 graduate, excelled in both football and wrestling at SFT. He received letters in both sports, Cook said.

"He was pretty active as far as athletics was concerned," Cook said. "He was a pretty average kind of kid. He was very outgoing, courteous and friendly. He had a lot of friends."

Cook said Turnbull was an above average student in the classroom who could best be described as "an over achiever" when it came to athletics.

"He didn't always get to play as much as he wanted in football, but he stuck it out and tried very hard." Cook said. "He got where he was in wrestling because be worked at it."

Von Stein, who spent much of the day Friday answering media inquiries, said a lot of the students at the high school seemed "sort of stunned" by the incident.

"They are not knowing what to say." Von Stein said. "I've seen them standing around in groups of two or three just talking quietly."

Cook said although most of the students had already heard about the shooting before they arrived at school Friday, school officials were trying to provide as much information and support as they could.

"For most of them this is the first time they have had to deal with a death," he said. "We read an anouncement to the students and we observed a moment or two of silence in the high school."

Turnbull's obituary appears on page 28.

This story is goes with the story at Osage County youth killed in shootings (1987).

Wilson Street it is!

On reviewing the 1920 US Census, it appears my great grandfather, William Henry Carothers, lived at 514 Wilson Street in Fort Scott, Kansas, at that time. In the 1930 US Census, William lived at 723 South Crawford Street in Fort Scott, Kansas. I wonder if the same houses are still there that they lived in, or if they've been torn down and newer buildings have replaced them? It would be nice to have some pictures of the houses at those addresses. I do plan to visit Fort Scott someday. It sounds like a nice place. These two addresses will be places to visit and take pictures at.

William Henry Carothers found in the 1920 US Census

I have found William Henry Carothers, his wife, Myrtle Elizabeth Herring, and their son, Gerald, in the 1920 US Census, Kansas, Bourbon County, Fort Scott. I have now located this family in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 US Census records. Gerald was born in Fort Scott in 1916, so this family was in Fort Scott from at least 1916 to a little after 1930. I will have to examine the record a little more closely to see what information can be found from the 1920 census record. The street name is a bit hard to read, but I think I should be able to determine it.

Hunting in the 1920 US Census

A year ago, I bought a subscription to access the online US Census records at Genealogy.com. I have made good use of it. It is extremely convenient and efficient for looking up information in US Census records. It is a bit pricey, but what to do? Many public libraries provide free remote access to HeritageQuestOnline.com for library card holders. HeritageQuestOnline provides online access to US Census records. Alas, my local and county libraries do not provide access to HeritageQuestOnline.

Tonight I've been looking for William Henry Carothers, his wife, Myrtle and their son, Gerald in the 1920 US Census, Kansas, Bourbon County, Fort Scott. William and Myrtle appear in Clinton, Henry County, Missouri in the 1910 census. In 1930, William and Gerald appear in Fort Scott. I have not yet discovered their whereabouts in the 1920 census. They could have been in Clinton, or somewhere else altogether, sigh...

I was looking on a map today and noticed that Fort Scott is only about 19 miles from Nevada, Missouri. Orlando and his family lived in Nevada at the time William lived in Fort Scott with his family.

Osage County youth killed in shootings (1987)

Osage County youth killed in shootings

WICHITA (AP) - A Wichita man was charged with first-degree murder and three counts of attempted murder Friday in the shooting death of one man and the wounding of three others at an exercise center.

Gary Cox, 26, was ordered held in lieu of $250,000 bail and a public defender was appointed to represent him. His next court appearance was scheduled for Wednesday in Sedgwick County District Court.

Cox was arrested without incident early Friday at a south Wichita motel about six hours after the shootings at the Universal Nautilus fitness center. Police said they found him with the help of informants and because he used his real name when he signed in at the exercise center.

Authorities said a gunman walked calmly into the health club in southeast Wichita at about 7:15 p.m. Thursday, displayed a membership card and signed the club register.

Investigators said the man pulled a large-caliber handgun from a duffel bag, knelt and held the gun with both hands as he fired four or five shots toward a group of men lifting weights. No motive for the shooting has been determined.

"Everybody dropped to the floor at once. It was like somebody just took a hatchet and cut down a bunch Of flowers," said Tim Freed, 20, an Oaklawn man who was one of about 20 members in the club Thursday night.

Witnesses told police the gunman tried unsuccessfully to reload his weapon, then yelled: "Now I'm going to get my automatic." He ran out the back door but didn't return.

The dead man was identified as Michael R. Turnbull, 18, of Carbondale, who had won a membership at the health club a few months earlier in a radio station contest. Turnbull was graduated from high school in 1986 and had been attending the Wichita Automotive and Electronics Institute.

The three injured in the shooting were Lynn Nicholson, 35, who was in fair condition at St. Joseph Medical Center with a stomach wound; William R Neal, 26, who suffered a superficial thigh wound and was released after treatment at a hospital, and Jerrod B, Kackley, 13, who suffered a superficial hand wound and was treated at the scene.

Police said they were called to investigate an incident that allegedly involved Cox nearly 12 hours before the shootings. A neighbor reported Cox had grabbed her around the neck and held a gun to her head, police said.

"He said: 'Freeze. I'm going to shoot you' " Patricia Bauer said during an interview Friday.

A police spokesman said he didn't know why Cox wasn't arrested following the incident with Bauer at his apartment building.

Assistant District Attorney Greg Waller said he hasn't received any evidence concerning the alleged attack on Bauer.

The Turnbulls of Kansas

I've continued to search some online Kansas newspapers for more info on the family of Ronnie Turnbull. Unfortunately, they do not go back very far in time so I've not had much further luck. I did request an obituary from the archivist from one newspaper. It is for Michael Turnbull, Ronnie's grandson, who was murdered in 1987. I will be posting some newspaper articles on this sad story at a later date.
